Alan Dowson was a lifelong educator, campaigner and public servant whose connection with Peterborough spanned more than half a century. Born in Middlesbrough, he served in the RAF before moving to Peterborough in 1968, where he built a career in education, teaching and lecturing for many years before becoming an education consultant. First elected as a councillor in 1971, Alan served the people of Peterborough across several decades and represented a number of wards during a distinguished career in local government. He was elected Mayor of Peterborough in 2022 and became widely known as “The People's Mayor” for his dedication to residents and community causes.
