Jess Butterworth spent her childhood between the UK and India, and grew up hearing stories about the Himalayas from her grandmother. Soon, Jess was clambering over the mountains searching for wildlife and imagining that she was on her own adventures in the wilderness. Jess has always wanted to be a writer. She holds a BA (Hons) in Creative Writing from Bath Spa University, where she won the Bath Spa Writing for Young People Prize 2011, and an MA in Creative Writing for Young People from there too.

Where the Wilderness Lives centres around the character of Cara who lives on a houseboat with her mum, siblings and dog called Willow. Her dad used to live with them but now lives in a remote part of Wales. The adventure starts when Cara and her siblings find a locked safe one day when they are helping with a clean-up of the canal where they live. A fire destroys their houseboat one night and while her mum is in hospital and Cara looking after her siblings, a thief comes to steal the safe. The children leave the house they are temporarily living in to travel in their houseboat with the safe to go to their dad and then on foot on a journey of survival across Welsh mountains in the snow. Throughout this exciting adventure story, Jess Butterworth weaves in facts about survival and the environment, exploring themes of friendship, bullying and bravery. She also captures beautifully a remote part of Wales where there is ancient woodland known as the Celtic rainforest, which is home to some rare species of lichen, which is what takes Cara’s dad there to study it. Alongside this main storyline, runs a folktale about a girl called Gwyon, which is a story with its roots in the Welsh myth and legends told to the author when she was growing up. I won’t spoil the ending but this folktale is cleverly brought into the main story at the end! This is a beautifully written adventure story in a rich Welsh setting with themes of friendship, bravery, survival and environment.
