Finding short stories for children can be difficult, especially something with a contemporary setting, so it’s a pleasure to find Cat Weatherill’s new book, Where Magic Hides . Most of the stories feature children from a variety of settings in Wales, who are looking for magic in their ordinary lives. Some of them find it in supernatural happenings, in the rainbow wish which is unexpectedly powerful or the Troll who longs for knowledge; others discover magic in the world of their imagination or, in the case of the king in the delightful first story, in a very ordinary but unexpected place. The stories are told with energy and pace, but at enough length to develop character and motive and hold the attention. This book would be an excellent addition to a classroom library.
