Amy Dillwyn (1845-1935) was described by the Pall Mall Gazette as "One of the most original women of the age." Born in Swansea, she was a novelist, feminist and pioneering industrialist. Considered to be an eccentric (she smoked cigars, and wore a trilby hat) her unorthodox and iconoclastic views brought her fame and respect. She published six novels, and was a regular reviewer for The Spectator.

On the surface a feminist manifesto, Jill is a poignant story of same-sex desire and unrequited love. An accessible new introduction tells the autobiographical story on which the novel is based - the author’s own passionate attachment to a woman she called her wife, but who she couldn’t have. The editor, Kirsti Bohata, is also the editor of Bertha Thomas’s Stranger within the Gates (Honno, 2008) and a widely published critic of Welsh women’s writing. Her latest book is a co-edited volume of essays, Rediscovering Margiad Evans: Gender, Marginality and Illness (UWP, 2013) and her study of Amy Dillwyn’s fiction will be published by University of Wales Press. She teaches at Swansea University.
