D. Simon Evans was an eminent scholar on medieval Welsh literature and his numerous publications include Gramadeg Cymraeg Canol, Buched Dewi, A Grammar of Middle Welsh, Historia Gruffud vab Kenan and Medieval Welsh Literature.

In this scholarly volume, D. Simon Evans presents to the non-Welsh speaker the medieval text of the Welsh Life of St David, one of the early Christian missionaries of West Wales; this annotated text is based on that in the Book of the Anchorite of Llanddewibrefi (c. 1350). The lengthy Introduction deals with early references to Dewi and brings together the valid information relating to the Saint in the sixth century, thus separating the historical Dewi from the Dewi of folklore and legend. This edition contains a detailed comparison of the Welsh Life with the earlier Latin version. The detailed notes are an immense asset to the appreciation of the text. This book is not only an important contribution to the study of medieval Welsh texts, but also outlines early Welsh history and in particular the significance of Dewi Sant in this early period.
