Back in the 1950s at Tregaron Secondary School, as in other similar educational establishments in Wales, the subject of Welsh History was non-existent. It was a case of, ‘for Wales, see England’. How I wish this little treasure of Welsh historical facts had existed back then. As succinctly described on the back cover, this is a compendium of ‘366 fun and surprising stories about Wales – one for every day of the year.’ Brother and sister Huw Rees and Siân Kilcoyne reveal myriads of Welsh-related events. The blurb continues, ‘there are tales about the Welsh princes and the world wars, megastar musicians and sporting superstars. With a healthy dose of the unusual and unexpected, this book will delight and captivate anyone interested in Wales and its incredible influence in the wider world.’ And that statement definitely does not contravene the Trade Description Act. On opening this attractive publication by Calon, the University of Wales Press’s non-fiction imprint, I naturally turned to my birthday date, December 21. I discovered that this was the day in 1963 when the Daleks first appeared. What have the Daleks to do with Wales, you may ask? Well, the television drama Doctor Who was the creation of Cardiff-born Terry Nation. Several other important Welsh connections with this classic series are revealed. Between New Year’s Day and its Calennig and December 31 with its Rasys Nos Galan, we are regaled with facts that the authors assume we probably didn’t know. And speaking for myself, they are right. Randomly I turned to May Day, when fires were lit by Druids for Beli Mawr, the Celtic God of Fire. What happened on June 22 in 1402? The Battle of Brynglas was fought at Pilleth near Knighton, Owain Glyndŵr’s greatest victory. On to August 25 in 1945, when evacuees from various English cities were allowed to return to their families. On we go to October 14 in 1913, that dreadful day when 439 miners died at Senghennydd’s Universal Colliery. On again to Christmas Day 1914 when Frank Richards of Blaina of the 2nd Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers on the front line in northern France raised a Merry Christmas sign, leading to German and Allied soldiers shaking hands. This goldmine of knowledge, we are told, is the authors’ first publishing venture. Let us sincerely hope that it won’t be their last.
