Gwen Awbery was, before retirement, a lecturer in Welsh for Adults at Cardiff University. Nowadays she can often be found exploring graveyards! She says: ‘I have often come across people looking for a family grave, but unable to understand the Welsh wording on the gravestones. I hope this handbook will fill the gap, and enable anyone researching family history in Wales to understand these inscriptions, and will cast new light on the family background revealed there.’

Everything is covered: personal names, and the changes to them over the centuries; family relationships, place-names, dates, social status. The author has included information about the Welsh language, to help you unravel mutations and older versions of words. Biblical verses and poems are examined too, and there is a word list at the end of the book. And at the end of each chapter there is a piece of Welsh cultural and social history – for instance, about where incomers came from, why some inscriptions are a mixture of Welsh and English, and about people who died suddenly in an accident.
