When Buffalo Bill bursts into town with his band of Indian braves and sharp-shooting cowboys, crowds throng the streets of Cardiff. They all want a glimpse of the world-famous Wild West show. Amongst them is young Sam Thomas. But it isn't long before Sam's in danger ... but who can he trust and where will he find a place to hide?

This is a delightful book which I am certain will reveal a moment in Welsh history that is new to most children. Who knew that Buffalo Bill toured Wales in the early 20th century, with his Wild West Show? As if that wasn’t adventure enough, the story contains a murder and a witness on the run. It’s packed with events and captures a long-gone time, complete with terms we might not use nowadays; this is appropriately explained in an author’s note at the end. My only complaint is that I was left wanting more; the story comes in at less than one hundred pages. Its briskness might be a strength as the pace never lags. At the same time, I wanted to see more of the world that Carradice painted: a poverty stricken Cardiff, and the wild, colourful environment of Buffalo Bill’s show.
