Bywgraffiad yr Awdur / Author Biography
Michael Lawrence attended the same art school as three famous pop stars, but unlike them didn’t get involved in music, instead taking a job in a graphic design studio in London where, before long, he morphed into a photographer. As a photographer he took pictures for advertising agencies, newspapers and publishers, of pop stars, politicians, fashion models, and tens of thousands of total strangers. He has also been an antiques dealer and a printer (photographic and silkscreen), has co-owned and run two art galleries, made hundreds of paintings, drawings and experimental digital images, and published around forty-five books for children and five for adults. Books of his have been widely translated, including into Welsh, Slovakian, Turkish and Chinese. As a children’s author he has visited a great many schools, appeared on Blue Peter by viewer request, and uttered codswallop on the stages of many a literary festival. He no longer puts in personal appearances unless disguised as someone else entirely.

Founded in 2010 and based in Cardiff, Wales, Candy Jar Books is an award-winning independent publisher with a diverse and exciting catalogue. After 15 years, the company continues to grow, delivering bold, fresh titles across multiple genres that captivate readers of all ages. Standout successes include the official books based on the classic animation The Raccoons and the reissue of the very first Ivor the Engine book, originally published in 1962. The company also relaunched Michael Lawrence’s bestselling Jiggy McCue series, revealing Jiggy’s face for the first time and giving these beloved adventures a fresh lease of life for today's readers. Candy Jar delights in taking great stories and ensuring they continue to spark joy and imagination for a new generation. Candy Jar has carved out a major presence in the Doctor Who universe, with bestselling spin-offs such as The Lethbridge-Stewart series and the family-friendly Lucy Wilson Mysteries (based in Ogmore-by-Sea, Wales). These titles continue to attract loyal fans as well as younger readers discovering the Whoniverse for the first time. Alongside fiction, Candy Jar’s high-quality coffee table art books – featuring the work of artists such as Chris Achilléos, Colin Howard, and Jeff Cummins – remain must-have collector’s items.
