The discovery in the 1970s of a number of boxes containing early glass plate negatives of Montgomery provided the impetus for this long overdue book. These plates formed the nucleus of the large collection of local pictures now housed in the Old Bell Museum,and many of them, together with the authors' personal collection of photographs and other material, have been used in its production.

In 17 chapters (this 2010 edition includes a chapter on the workhouse) the authors tell the story of the town and its immediate locality, a story richly illustrated both with photographs and documents from the sources mentioned above, frequently giving amusing details of life in the old county town. The story is not just of the notable features – the castle, the church, Lymore Hall and the Town Hall – but includes the stories and news of many inhabitants over the years, of trades and professions, of inns and hotels, of the varied sports and celebrations in which the townsfolk have participated, of the shops that have acted as communal meeting places, the gaols and the fire service – and much more besides. Ann & John Welton, both retired medical practitioners, came to live and work in Montgomery in 1966. They are founder members of Montgomery Civic Society and, with their passionate interest in local history, have been instrumental in the establishment by the society of the award-winning Old Bell Museum. They were largely responsible for the collection and preservation of the archive.
