Jesobel Jones is bold and beautiful. The daughter of a hand model and a washed-up rock star, she sees no need to apologise for her rambling house, her imperfect family, her single status... or her weight. Jess makes her own cupcakes and she eats them, too. That is, until Own Clothes Day when a wardrobe malfunction leaves Jess exposed, and a mean girl calls her fat.

Anna Mainwaring read The Lord of the Rings when she was seven and hasn't stopped reading since. After studying English Literature she spent a brief time as a banker before realising this was a bad choice for someone who is number dyslexic, and became an English teacher. She lives in Cheshire, UK, with her family and a very dangerous goldfish.

This, as a genre, is one of my least favourite – bullies and mean girls in a school setting. Though there is usually a happy ending, I find it really difficult to read about a child suffering at the hands of a bully. So Jess was a breath of fresh air – a confident girl who accepts herself as she is, while being very aware of the conventional view of how a teenage girl should be. Following a confrontation with a fellow pupil, Jess begins reassessing herself in a more negative way. We meet her dysfunctional family and watch her embarking on the early stages of a relationship and the story follows a typical structure until, ultimately, she gets her happy ever after. The message of the story is made clear from the beginning, when Jess imagines explaining to her mother that, “I find every day a battle against stereotypical ideas of female beauty and an education system that requires you to be ‘perfect’ at all times.” The first-person narrative gives younger readers someone to identify with, and older readers (like me!) a taste of what being a 21st Century teenager is like. I was less keen on Mainwaring’s use of “teen-speak” – “slag lines”, used to mean visible knicker lines was particularly unappealing, as was the idea that Jess will “mess around” with a male pal at a party “if there’s no one else we fancy.” It’s these aspects that take the reading age up to Key stage 4 (14+).
