Billy Turpin has Cerebral Palsy, or CP, in his words. He has a lonely life in high school, bullied by boys who used to be his friends in primary school, and only his three-legged, one-eyed, smelly dog Nettle to talk to about all that sucks about school. The boys use horrible, spite-filled words that are thrown at him daily, and the girls treat him like a ‘cute’ plaything. Even his teachers fall into the trap of treating him differently. It’s a surprise that he manages to keep a sense of humour, although he does have a community of on-line friends who often get him through. Mia also has CP, and when Billy sees how fiercely Mia faces the world from her wheelchair, he begins to realise that he does have a voice (all be it a squeaky one). When his footballing hero and England captain Danny Cash makes a visit to his school, Billy is determined to show that he is more than just the kid in the wheelchair being asked to throw a ball back and forth during PE lessons. But the visit turns out to be both the worst and best that Billy could have imagined. Danny Cash is a self-centred, arrogant man who doesn’t even bother to acknowledge Billy, other than to call him by the wrong name, Willy – and he falls for the charms of (Evil) Rio, the bully who used to be Billy’s friend. Billy does, however, manage to change the day and score a header that wins him tickets to see Chelsea v his beloved Earls Court FC. That isn’t the end of the story. With Mia’s help Billy does something momentous and even makes the TV (more than once). This is a story about Billy being so much more than a thirteen-year-old in a wheelchair. It’s about the pain bullying can cause, both online and in person, and it is about bravery – the bravery needed to stand up (Billy’s words) to those bullies and to not let the words define who you want to be. It’s about his friendship with Mia who encourages him to fight back, to show the bullies and the adults that he is no Raspberry – he’s Raz Beri. With Mia’s help, Billy learns that he doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone, and that every time he does something that is hard and scary, it becomes a little bit less hard and scary the next time. A very enjoyable read. The story is told by Billy and his view of how the world see him. His sadness but also his funny, self-deprecating humour came through in every chapter. I also would have wanted Mia as my friend when I was thirteen. This is a book that should be in all schools!
