Peter Roberts has lived in the Rhondda all his life, and has worked at the University of South Wales (previously University of Glamorgan) for the last 25 years – he is currently a student disability adviser. He has been playing 11-a-side competitive grass roots football for almost four decades, predominantly in the Rhondda Valley, and currently plays for Ferndale and District Veterans in the Wales veterans’ league. This is his first book.

Written by the player-manager, it offers a unique insight into the ups and downs of local park football, highlighting numerous colourful characters and the camaraderie and banter that exist within the beautiful grassroots game. It includes abandoned games, cup wins, post-match drinking rituals, missing goal posts, missing match officials, pub crawls, cup losses and a tour to England. As the team embeds itself into the local community, it also offers a slice of South Wales Valleys working-class culture. It is a tale which all football fans and players alike can relate to, with similarly hilarious and at times bizarre occurring every weekend on park football fields up and down the country. Just think: this is where Gareth Bale could have ended up playing!
