This book is in three languages; Welsh, Japanese and English. It is based on the folk tale of the Salty Welsh Sea. Mermaids is about Morwen the beekeeper who wants to be a mermaid, so she tells her secret to the bees and meets the fish girls who live in Cardigan Bay and all over the world: Amabie from Japan, Pānia from New Zealand, Mami Wata from Africa and more.

Peter is a book illustrator and writer for children and grown-ups, a storyteller and folklorist who has written many books about Welsh and World folk tales and has been nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award for Children's Literature in 2025 and 2026. He has illustrated over 200 children's books for publishers in Wales and England, including many Well-loved fairy tales for Ladybird Books, his own books for JM Dent, Edna O'Brien's trilogy of Irish stories for Hodder & Stoughton, over 30 titles for Sunshine Books in New Zealand, and many fairy tale puppet books which have sold all round the world. He is also an oral storyteller who uses crankies when he tells tales, a large wooden box like a big picture frame with a long-illustrated scroll turned by a handle to create a moving picture book that illustrates the story.
