This is an engaging story about a young boy and his friendship with Celtie, one of the marsh ponies. Although not named in the text the Gower peninsula is the setting for this beautifully illustrated title by author-illustrator Fran Evans who spent some of her childhood on Gower. Cai is bullied at school and taunted by two boys who mock his creativity (Cai carves beautiful models from driftwood). One day the two bullies jeer at Cai down at the marsh where the tide is about to turn. They are cut off by the tide and have to be rescued by Cai and Celtie who bring them to safety. The three children become friends, Cai’s former tormentors learning wood-carving skills from their classmate.
