We follow the passion and suffering, happiness and bitterness of the lives of Doris, Arthur and Siân as important decisions have to be made, for better or for worse, which cause turmoil in the relationships between the characters of this novel.

Magwyd Kate Bosse-Griffiths (1910-1998) yn Wittenberg, yn yr Almaen. Pan ddaeth yr Awdurdodau i wybod bod ei mam o dras Iddewig dihangodd Kate, oedd erbyn hyn yn ddoethor, o'r Almaen, ac o dipyn i beth, fel Eifftiolegydd disglair daeth i Gymru ar ôl priodi J. Gwyn Griffiths. Gyda'i gallu cynhenid i ddysgu ieithoedd daeth mewn dim o bryd yn rhugl yn y Gymraeg, gan gychwyn ysgrifennu ffuglen yn yr iaith honno, a sefydlu Cylch Cadwgan, cymdeithas lenyddol athronyddol, ynghyd â J. Gwyn Griffiths, Pennar Davies, Rhydwen Williams ac eraill. Enillodd ei nofel gyntaf, Anesmwyth Hoen , wobr cystadleuaeth Llyfrau'r Dryw, 1941, ac enillodd ei stori, Y Bennod Olaf gystadleuaeth y Stori Fer yn Eisteddfod Genedlaethol 1944, a Kate Roberts yn beirniadu. Mae wedi cyhoeddi nifer o lyfrau eraill, yn eu plith Fy Chwaer Efa a Storïau Eraill (1944), Bwlch yn y Llen Haearn (1951), Trem ar Rwsia a Berlin (1962), Byd y Dyn Hysbys (1977) a Cariadau (1995).

Kate Bosse-Griffiths (1910-1998) was brought up in Wittenberg, Germany. When the authorities were told that her mother was half Jewish Kate, who was by now PhD graduate, left Germany, and eventually, as a brilliant Egyptologist, arrived in Wales having mariies J. Gwyn Griffiths. With her natural talent for languages she became a fluent Welsh speaker, started to write Welsh fiction and along with her husband, Pennar Davis, Rhydwen Williams and others founded the literary, philosophical club Clwb Cadwgan. Her first novel Anesmwyth Hoen, won the Llyfrau’r Dryw award in 1841, and her short story ‘Y Bennod Olaf’ won the Short Story competition at the National Eisteddfod in 1944 with Kate Roberts adjudicating. She has published many other books, including yn Fy Chwaer Efa a Storïau Eraill (1944), Bwlch yn y Llen Haearn (1951), Trem ar Rwsia a Berlin (1962), Byd y Dyn Hysbys (1977) and Cariadau (1995).

Prif gymeriad y stori hon yw Doris, merch ifanc ddeallus, a'i bryd ar ddilyn gyrfa lwyddiannus fel nyrs mewn ysbyty mawr yn y dref lle cafodd ei magu yn ne Cymru. Fel merch athronyddol a chwilfrydig ei natur, mae ei sgyrsiau fel arfer yn troi'n drafodaethau ar bynciau mawr dynoliaeth. Cred bod y fath beth yn bod â'r 'Profiad Mawr', ac y bydd hi ymhlith y nifer bychan iawn o ferched sy'n syrthio mewn cariad â'r un a dynghedwyd ar ei chyfer, a hithau ar ei gyfer yntau. The main character of this story is Doris, an intellingent young woman, determined to follow a career as a nurse in a large hospital in the town where she was brought up in south Wales. With a philosophical and curious nature, her conversations usually turn into discussions on subjects of importance to the human race. She believes that such a thing exists as 'The Great Experience' and that she will be among the blessed few who will fall in love with the one that fate has intended for her, an him for her.When she meets Arthur, he became the love of her life, and her dream of living a full, equal interesting life with hi, the two as one, with a houseful of children, she believes, is about to be realised. However, the the great intricacy of the story is that Arthur, who works as a young lecturer, is already engaged to Sian, a conventional, dependent character whose only purpose in life to m make sure he husband to be is comfortable, and successful. As one who is ten years older that Arthur, Sian had sacrificed everything in order to pay for Arthur's further education and will not survive unless Arthur marries her... We follow the passion and suffering, happiness and bitterness of the lives of Doris, Arthur and Sian as important decisions have to be made, for better or for worse, which cause turmoil in the relationships between the characters of this novel. The novel delves into the nature of love, and asks whether love outside marriage can challenge conventional morality and traditional religion.
