Libby and her friend Connie deserve a break. As term starts, the spying of familiar paintings in a city gallery sparks a series of events that lead the pair into danger, confusion and an unavoidable mystery. Will Edinburgh offer them the rest that Paris didn’t? Will they end up in an adventure that no one wants them to discover? I think we know the answers. Libby and the Highland Heist is the second of Jo Clarke’s Travelling School Mysteries. Illustrated by Becka Moor the mysteries take place in, yes, a travelling school. Leaning into the great literary traditions of boarding-school capers – think Hogwarts, Malory Towers, and Tom Brown’s school days – but with the addition of each book taking place in a new location, Clarke has created a series that promises to stay fresh and ever-changing. Libby is a quick thinker, studious but fun, while Connie seems to be blind to much of what grabs Libby’s attention, and to be coming out of her shyness under Libby’s guidance. Their classmates, Noah and Sebastian, offer a comedic addition – not to mention useful abilities in mimicry and forgery! Clarke’s characters follow reliable and familiar literary roles, but stay fresh and current and are as alive and as vivid as the book’s wintry setting. This series promises to be one to follow, while successfully offering a story that isn’t entirely reliant on sequential reading from the first book. Readers of Libby and the Highland Heist will no doubt be keen to go back to Paris in Libby and the Parisian Puzzle . If nothing else, it will be a welcome distraction while the world waits for the forthcoming Libby and the Manhattan Mystery !
