1943. The German bombing campaign continues but the men and women of the Home Front are stoic. The Fourth Operational Corps has other things to worry about. Professor Edward Travers has been sent to look for a connection between a missing child and mysterious pillars of flame in the high moorlands of the Peak District. He finds a village full of buried secrets and a strange community of people that don't seem entirely human. Meanwhile, Eileen Le Croisette is looking into some serious problems at a local steelworks and is trying to infiltrate the women working there. A new owner is working on a 'special project' that has swallowed money and resources meant for the war effort. Avoiding his domineering father, a man called Matthew Stewart, is also on the case. He wasn't banking on meeting a group of homicidal little robots however... The pieces are being set for another conflict, one that started a long way away, to erupt in the middle of wartime Britain.
