Zakia Carpenter-Hall is a writer, tutor and critic. She was a winner of Poetry London's inaugural mentoring scheme, a London Library Emerging Writer and a Jerwood Bursary Recipient. She's been a Poet in Residence with The Scottish Poetry Library in partnership with Africa in Motion and Obsidian Foundation. She's a PhD candidate at Royal Holloway, University of London.

Zakia Carpenter-Hall’s debut poetry collection, Into the Same Sound Twice , delves into the very human connection we have to the elements of the natural world through the poet’s intimate life experiences, which are simultaneously unique and universal. Through this exploration, Carpenter-Hall invokes a feeling of the sublime, putting into perspective how small we truly are compared to the world around us and, in fact, beyond – yet, the way in which the vastness of it all diminishes without anybody to perceive it is also considered in this intriguing collection. The poet manages to discuss these themes in fewer than 40 pages, with one of Carpenter-Hall’s first poems, ‘Big Talk’, attempting to understand the science of the universe and the human brain in the sharing of a kiss. The final lines of this poem – ‘We’re living in a universe that doesn’t make sense // when trying to approach it through the senses’ – are perhaps indicative of what is to be paralleled throughout the rest of the collection: science and humanism. ‘The Gold Price’ examines this further in its discussion of the material value of organic metals, in comparison to what the poet’s mother taught her of their metaphorical value relating to familial love. Using a variety of poetic structures that offer different perspectives on the themes she explores, these two poems, along with others toward the end of the collection (namely, ‘What is the Heart of a River’ and ‘Twelve Seconds of Film’), are some of the clearest indications of Carpenter-Hall finding significance in science through introspection, and vice versa. The cover of Into the Same Sound Twice broadens the themes within the book, and is also cover art that entices, aesthetically and in terms of what it is depicting. Cover designer Angelique Stephenson complements Carpenter-Hall’s poems with a seemingly sketched, almost child-like drawing resembling a kind of chemical reaction, perfectly illustrating humanity’s innocence in trying to understand the science that underpins our existence and the fact that we try to make sense of it through our own experiences. This cover is a brilliant reflection of the concepts conveyed by Carpenter-Hall, especially when the poet discusses her relationships through similarities to the elements, nature and science, everything that the world and beyond is, in an effort to simply understand. Through her poetry, Carpenter-Hall presents readers with an individualised understanding of creation by connecting it to her own exceptional life, metaphorically minimising creation’s immensity and grounding the comprehension of one’s thoughts in existence. Hence, Into the Same Sound Twice brings the reader that little bit closer to the universe upon the turn of each page.
