This is a tale that combines real life challenges (bullying, starting secondary school, making new friends) with supernatural ones (hauntings, monstrous and evil ghosts, saving innocent spirits). It is an effective balance which would keep a 10–12 year old reader engaged. Set very specifically in the Skirrid Inn near Abergavenny, the story recounts the history of Judge Jeffreys and his brutal sentencing in the 17th century. Wrapped up in this tale is another, of a maid who died in the 1800s, but is trapped in the inn as a result of unfinished business. Emlyn, the main character, is required to save both the maid and his father from the cruel actions of Judge Jeffreys’ ghost. The narrative cleverly dances between life at school and the more mysteriously spooky atmosphere of the inn. Brading keeps us rooting for the hero and his friend by painting an unremittingly cruel picture of Jeffreys. Perhaps the most interesting character(s) is a composite of many of Jeffreys’ condemned victims, who amalgamate into one human shape. Look out for their noble rescue in the end chapters. Sadly, this book is peppered with typos and small printing errors – would that we had more careful proof-readers ..!
