A book not much bigger than a pocket book with the content worthy of an encyclopedia? Yes, A Guide to Welsh Place-Names by Anthony Lias is worthy of that description. It has been primarily produced for people interested in the origins and meaning of Welsh place-names but who have little or no understanding of the Welsh language itself. Extensively researched, the reader is guided through the actual construction of Welsh place-names. Beginning with an account of the basic mechanisms of the Welsh language, the author builds on this to provide an account of the history of the language represented in the place-names themselves. This embraces not only the human element but themes such as nature – with references to trees, plants, animals, birds, etc – ancient legends and superstitions. Parallel to this, the author refers to English place-names, highlighting the unique individuality of each. Over 500 place-names are included together with their translation. I used to live close to the village of Llechryd and I discovered from this guide that this translates as ‘Stone ford’. With the river running by the village, it then appeared so plainly obvious. It felt as good knowing this as it did when our old house name was explained to us. The book makes compelling reading, one avenue of discovery leading to another. As a tool for research it has to be invaluable, and as it is small enough to slip into a pocket it can accompany you and serve as your own personal guide to these fascinating place-names.
