First published in 2002, David N. Thomas’s The Dylan Thomas Trail is now in its third impression, which gives an indication of its appeal. Certainly, having read it in one sitting, I’ve hatched a plan to walk the three-day trail as soon as I can, preferably – though not necessarily – in the company of others who share an interest in Dylan Thomas. I say not necessarily because the author has succeeded in identifying a moderate walk with obvious overnight stops that, although planned to embrace places with strong associations with the poet, also offers other advantages of more general appeal. Beginning in the village of Llan-non (Ceredigion), the trail is divided into three sections covering an average of eight miles, with overnight stops in Tal-sarn and Aberaeron, and ends in New Quay. Most people will be aware of New Quay’s claim to be the seaside town fictionalised as Llareggub in Under Milk Wood , and the author here includes some fascinating material that certainly appears to corroborate that. Fewer will know of Thomas’s more tenuous connections with Llan-non (where he spent time at the Central Hotel with his friend Thomas Herbert), or that several of his poems refer to his stays at Plas Gelli. This small mansion just outside Tal-sarn was rented during the war by Margaret Phillips, whose daughter Vera was a childhood friend of Thomas’s and was married to William Killick – the man who was accused and acquitted of attempting to murder Thomas in 1945. A recent film, The Edge of Love , focused on this dramatic event, whose location – the tiny bungalow of Majoda, now modernised – is one of several of Dylan and Caitlin’s temporary homes and refuges that you will pass on the Dylan Thomas Trail. The author includes a fantastic miscellany of information, not just about Dylan Thomas, but also about the places you will pass on the trail. It sounds a delightful walk in its own right – along riverbanks and cliff tops and through gentle countryside – and there is a useful list of hotels and guest houses so that you can book your accommodation in advance. And, if you’re a Thomas fan, don’t forget to take along a collection of his poems and a CD of Under Milk Wood to enhance the whole experience.
