After the Act of Union in 1536, Wales suffered from the religions and political quarrels of the Reformation and the loss of its gentry to London ambitions. Its resilient culture found its feet again however in the non-conformist and educational movements of the 18th century. Welsh publishing found its golden era, and radicalism spread across the land. At the same time Wales became the first industrialised nation in the world. From the 1850s, more of its workforce were in the coal, iron, copper and slate industries than in agriculture.
