This book is in three languages; Welsh, Irish and English. The White Midwinter Horse tells the story of Mari Lwyd, the iconic Welsh horse who sings and dances her way round Wales every New Year until she begins to wonder what to do with the other 364 days, so she sets off to find if there are any more horses like her who might become her friends.

Peter is a book illustrator and writer for children and grown-ups, a storyteller and folklorist who has written many books about Welsh and World folk tales and has been nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award for Children's Literature in 2025 and 2026. He has illustrated over 200 children's books for publishers in Wales and England, including many Well-loved fairy tales for Ladybird Books, his own books for JM Dent, Edna O'Brien's trilogy of Irish stories for Hodder & Stoughton, over 30 titles for Sunshine Books in New Zealand, and many fairy tale puppet books which have sold all round the world. He is also an oral storyteller who uses crankies when he tells tales, a large wooden box like a big picture frame with a long-illustrated scroll turned by a handle to create a moving picture book that illustrates the story.

This unique book is part of a series of children's books based on Welsh folk tales published by H'mm Foundation to promote the Welsh language and culture. For the first time the story is told in Welsh and English as well as a third language like Irish, Arabic and Japanese.
