Asterix and Obelix's drunken chieftain, Pwyllpendefix, sends them on a mission to Rome to fulfill a stupid bet. Their task is to come home with Caesar's laurel wreath to garnish a bowl of soup. But this is an increasingly difficult mission and doomed to failure, until fate plays a jealous hand in one of the clevrest of all the Asterix adventures.

A drunken Pwyllpendefix decides to get one up on his obnoxious brother-in-law, and promises to make him a special stew garnished by leaves from Caesar’s laurel wreath. A disgruntled Asterix is sent on a quest to Rome with Obelix to obtain the laurel wreath, where they sell themselves into slavery and try to get themselves into Caesar’s household. Their task seems increasingly impossible – the palace guards in Rome are far more formidable than the hapless legionaries who surround the village back in Gaul – but fate plays a favourable hand when jealousy paves the way to success. From fabulous culinary treats to entertaining in the Roman arena and keeping his temper checked, Asterix a Choron Cesar is one of the cleverest, complex and detailed of all the Asterix adventures.
