Yan Wu is Professor of Digital Media and Culture at Swansea University. Her research examines the political and cultural implications of digital media, with a focus on how digitalisation reshapes political communication, citizen journalism, public diplomacy and justice and equality. Her work has been published in leading international journals, including New Media & Society , International Journal of Digital Television , etc. She has been leading interdisciplinary projects exploring digital inclusivity and digital resilience for marginalised communities. She previously worked at Communication University of China, was awarded Special Awards for Canadian Studies Scholarship, and holds a PhD from Cardiff University.

The book will be featured at Chinese New Year celebrations (this usually takes place at Waterfront Museum in Swansea and Senedd in Cardiff). We will seek to present the book through public engagement sessions at the Hay Festival. In June 2027, further engagement activities will take place during Chinese Cultural Heritage Day through discussions, exhibitions, or community storytelling sessions Against All Odds: Oral Histories of Chinese Immigrants in South Wales Since WWII seeks to celebrate minority histories and cultures that have long been overlooked. These 30 digital stories are told by UK-born Chinese as well as first-generation Chinese immigrants from Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, Brunei, and other geopolitical regions. The Chinese in Wales Association (CIWA) is a charitable organisation founded in 2007 in Swansea by Ms Shirley Au-Yeung. The organisation aims to deliver services that will make a positive difference to the lives of ethnic Chinese residents in Wales. CIWA was awarded the National Lottery Heritage Fund in 2023 to produce oral history digital stories based on immigration experience shared by ethnic Chinese in Wales. The collection has been archived in the National Library’s People’s Collection and is currently on exhibition at St Fagan’s National Museum of History.
