Novelist, essayist, poet and writer of short stories, with a lifelong identification with the Welsh border country, Margiad Evans – the pseudonym of Peggy Eileen Whistler (1909-1958) - was one of the most remarkable women writers of the mid-twentieth century. She published four novels and was known for her brilliant descriptions of the natural world.

In 1941, the Welsh Border writer Margiad Evans (1909-1958) moved into a farm worker’s cottage in the Herefordshire village of Llangarron. The house had uninterrupted views from its hilltop position far into Wales. The combination of isolation, simplicity of living and closeness to nature inspired Margiad to become one of the country’s leading nature writers in her 1943 Autobiography. However, her opportunity to develop this genre was destroyed when, in 1950, she suffered her first epileptic fit, subsequently found to be caused by a brain tumour that killed her in 1958. A Ray of Darkness (1952) is her attempt to come to terms with this most debilitating of diseases and still represents one of the very few accounts of epilepsy written by a sufferer. As such, it has world-wide value to clinicians as well as being a literary work of great depth. This re-issue by Honno follows the publication in 2020 of its successor, The Nightingale Silenced .
