Chloë Heuch was born in Taunton and lives near Pwllheli on the North Wales coast with her partner, two children, her psychopath cat and the dog. Past jobs have included working in a children's home, teaching, bar work and working in the local post office. She has a Creative Writing MA from Lancaster University and is a member of SCBWI. She currently divides her time between her children, her writing and teaching teenagers.

One of the biggest changes in children's lives is the transition from primary to secondary school. For the main character in the book, Mo, being neurodiverse and having autism makes the change even more challenging. The author writes with such realism, sensitivity, detail and depth in regard to autism and it’s this which makes this book stand out. It read as an honest insight to some of the struggles which students can face on a daily basis. The references to stimming, aversion to certain fabrics and fascinations with particular topics added the authentic touches to Mo’s character. Mo starts secondary school and experiences problems with the friendships from primary school. However, some of the most shocking and inappropriate treatment of Mo is from a very blinkered, uninformed and awful teacher. Through Mo's difficulties in school she luckily meets a kindred spirit and kind new friend, Carys. Carys is dealing with their own problems, including her very strict father. Together Mo and Carys learn how to navigate secondary school and the trials and tribulations of school life. As part of a history project Mo is drawn towards the old asylum in her town and the patients who were previously treated there. This leads to an exciting adventure which results in a terrible accident. The atmospheric description of the asylum gave me goosebumps, and I loved the paranormal twist towards the end of the story. The author manages to broach even the most sensitive topics – such as gender fluidity, puberty, co-parenting and divorce – in an open and authentic way. None of the topics feel like they are added to the story as a tick box exercise, which has been my experience in some previous books I have read. They are weaved into the story effortlessly and with genuine, accurate feeling which the author must be given credit for. The story is an authentic, sensitive read with an enjoyable plot and interesting characters. I will certainly recommend this to our students in Year 7 who may be facing a similar journey. This book is a sure addition to our school library.
