Both his critiques of the social and political situation and his short stories were published (in Left Review and New Writing ), and his best known work, his memoir These Poor Hands (1939), was recognised as an important document. His work was published regularly in journals during the war, and he broadcast and wrote not only on mining but on wider political issues. He began two novels but neither was published. This collection focuses on a substantial part of Home on the Hill (a further autobiography), a selection of unpublished short stories, much of his unfinished novel, Castell Vale , and his War Diary up to early 1941. While it is impossible to say how successful the finished novel might have been, the substantial extract included here is a vivid recreation of the hard life and and close companionship found in the valleys. The hero escapes through his musical talent, and there are some well-rounded characters, though it is hard to judge how the rather idealised heroine would have been developed. The memoir Home on the Hill is full of details of Coombes’s mining life, some of which he used in his published short stories. He gives the reader a very strong sense of the physical conditions, perils and privations but without self-pity or over-dramatisation. The War Diary is an unusual insight into a little-recorded part of ‘home front’ experience: the frustration, misinformation and fears, the problems caused by the extreme strictness of the black-out in such a rural area, and the sense of a world turned upside down. Coombes’s comments in all these works show a wise man of great critical shrewdness whose grasp of the problems and needs of his industry, both before and after nationalisation, might have been better heeded. Apart from the importance of Coombes’s writing as a social record, the short stories here show the excellence of his literary talent. This is especially true of ‘The Watch’, whose raw power and sense of drama makes one wish he had published much more in this medium.
