The book follows on from their successful and popular explorations of Cardiff, Walking Cardiff , which I reviewed a couple of years ago. There is an emphasis on the relatively recent industrial history of the area, but Peter Finch and John Briggs also have a penchant for the literary figures and the movers and shakers who have been responsible for creating the unique character of the place. There have been huge changes in the land over the past 40 years since the accelerated demise of the coal industry, and the area is probably changing faster now than it ever has in the past. As with Cardiff, Peter Finch is warmly familiar with the extraordinary number of poets and writers who haunt these valleys. Those still living would seem to be part of a distinctive local coterie. Using the copious public transport opportunities offered, our heroes have created an impressive number of short and revealing walks which are well documented, with useful maps provided to make it easy for anyone to follow their routes.
