When the director describes a desire to make a road movie (‘One character’s journey. A personal odyssey. But with all these trippy elements thrown in.’), Trevor's response is to think it uninspired. It's an intentionally unsettling opening to what is essentially Trevor’s journey (his own odyssey with all these trippy elements thrown in), and it sets the tone perfectly. The Drive is a road novel that knowingly puts down the clichés of its own genre and acknowledges the reader’s expectations by driving right round them. The Drive is Keevil's second novel and was rightly short-listed for 2014's Wales Book of the Year Award – an award that his début novel, Fireball , was long-listed for in 2010. It's not hard to appreciate why he's been so lauded: The Drive is intensely readable, with a plot that's as fast and spontaneous as it is fun and dangerous. Narrating entirely in the first person, Keevil manages to create a rounded and believable character in Trevor, giving him a turn of phrase and a handle on metaphors that impress yet remain in character. He is at once pitiful and predictable, yet funny and smart. In many ways The Drive is the classic road-trip novel, while in others Keevil doesn't allow it to fall into cliché. For example, while Trevor’s is a great American journey, it actually starts in Canada in an airport car park that’s hard to get out of. Similarly, when arriving in San Francisco, Trevor is denied the cinematic arrival he wants by crossing the Golden Gate Bridge; instead he takes a wrong turn and has to call a friend for directions. The reader is constantly denied their expectations of what a typical road novel should deliver, and it's this that keeps us on the edge of our seats as much as the highs and lows of Trevor's rollercoaster journey. The novel has its flaws, and for me they largely came in the cast of other characters Trevor meets along the way. While some are engaging, mysterious, warm and understandable, a few read as little more than the clichés Keevil so skilfully avoids elsewhere in the book. Keevil also flirts with Jung’s idea of synchronicity, but in parts steps over the philosophical line, making it feel as though perhaps there’s an over-reliance on coincidence driving the plot. These are small criticisms though and don’t detract from what’s an excellent novel.
