She works as a freelance writer\/editor and tutor. Besides appearing widely in journals, she has published a pamphlet with Rack Press, Terra Ignota (2013) and a full collection, Tilt, with Cinnamon Press (2014) which was highly commended in the 2015 Forward prizes. She has won awards in various competitions, including the National Poetry Competition. She is a Hawthornden Fellow (2017) and the recipient of a Literature Wales Writers bursary in 2013 and 2018. She is the Editor of The Lampeter Review.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003c\/section\u003e\u003csection\u003e\u003ch3\u003eAdolygiad y Cyhoeddwr \/ Publisher Review\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is Rosalind Hudis’s second full collection, following ‘Tilt’ and the pamphlet ‘Terra Ignota’, both of which were very well received. As the title suggests, many of these poems are concerned with observing decay and our attempts to fight it – in works of art and in people. There is an intense awareness of material and texture, from ‘How to Make Restorer’s Glue’ (from a sturgeon’s swim-bladder) to the physical processes of making pigments in the Renaissance: ‘…rabbit skin, horse hoof, pig’s blood. \/ I knife, mine, grind, churn, pound, steep, sweat \/ my way to that primal blue you worship. \/ When you varnish me with meaning, remember \/ the grit under my nails…’ The same muscular language is used figuratively in ‘How to Tenderise a Word’, to great effect. While fascinated by the feel and process both of making and mending pictures, Hudis is also sensitive to their layers of meaning. In ‘Book of Masters’ she recalls her father’s reverence for classic paintings, his comment on Matisse’s The Conversation , and how it led her into a view of her grandparents’ relationship. She refers to several of Gwen John’s paintings – the wry, characterful Mère Poussepin (her individuality restored from the flat icon of a prayer card) and John’s various versions of her own studio, which seem to show different versions of the artist’s self. In ‘The Angels Consider Their Restoration’ she suggests that there might be a downside – that perhaps some images should be allowed to decay, that the angels are trapped in an outdated image and wish to escape. The central group of poems mainly concern the aging and death of her father and mother. ‘Hospital Art’ recalls a visit to her father ‘wintered in this holding space’, but the blue colours in pictures she passes call back a memory of her father working on his blue boat – a treasured shared experience. A shared walk following a river (‘Esk’) which sometimes vanished from sight becomes an image for conversations broken by his lack of memory until his flow of life silts down to ‘dark brown deafness’. The ‘Rift’ in her mother’s life is more sudden: ‘All her words \/ flurried up in one sweep, left.’ She becomes like a bombed house – ‘one side gone utterly’. Anyone who has lived with a stroke victim will recognise the painful truth of ‘The Person on Display Has Been Replaced by a Replica’, which ends with the person ‘being unfleshed into stone’, and also the poignant simplicity of ‘She dies first on the left’, which ends, ‘when she dies on the right \/ her fingers meet.’ The later poems of the collection have to do with collecting and preservation rather than restoration, referencing adventurous explorers and plant collectors (with a touch of taxidermy). She returns to her fascination with the colour blue (especially the temperamental Himalayan blue poppies). Perhaps in reaction to the classic images, ‘Annunciation’ is a satirical twenty-first-century reimagining, with a ‘godlet’ instantly delivered but ‘no options for feedback’ and not coming up to expectations. Rosalind Hudis’s collection, while it has recurrent themes, ranges widely both in form and subject and moves from intense personal experience to the imagined lives of characters from distant times and places. (I would have found it helpful to have more notes, especially on the various pictures referred to.)
