He was a local government officer for 30 years before taking early retirement in 1999. His first book, Rails in Wales - the Cambrian Lines, was published by Ian Allan Publishing in 1984. His latest book, Festiniog Railway The Spooner Era and After 1830 - 1920 is his first for Pen \u0026amp; Sword Transport. His first commissioned work was an article about the Lincolnshire Coast Light Railway published in the erstwhile Ian Allan magazine Railway World in 1983. Since then he has built a reputation for books and articles about the narrow gauge railways of north Wales although other subjects, including travelling post offices, tramways and occasionally standard gauge railways, also receive his attention. He started compiling a regular narrow gauge railway news column for Railway World in 1991 and has continued it for Steam Railway since 1995. During the 1980s and 1990s he compiled a series of albums dealing with Welsh narrow gauge lines, tramways and the Isle of Man Railway using many of his own photographs. He also delved into the history of the Festiniog and Welsh Highland Railways with books in the Ian Allan 'Portrait' series. His album of historical photographs, Festiniog Railway - a view from the past, was the first title in this popular series; he followed it with one on the Welsh narrow gauge. Writing and researching on a fulltime basis since 2006, he has made a significant contribution to OPC's popular 'Illustrated History' series with well-received books on the Welsh Highland Railway, Festiniog Railway, Shropshire \u0026amp; Montgomeryshire Light Railway, travelling post offices and the Snowdon Mountain Railway. The Welsh Highland Railway book was reprinted twice and has been reissued in an extensively revised and enlarged edition which has already been reprinted. Serious talk of revival started in the 1960s but restoration did not start until 1997, with the neighbouring Ffestiniog Railway at the helm, supported by generous donors and benefactors, the Millennium Commission, the Welsh Government and teams of enthusiastic volunteers. Author Peter Johnson steers a course through the railway's complicated pre-history before describing the events, including a court hearing, three public inquiries and a great deal of controversy, leading to the start of services between Caernarfon and Porthmadog in 2011.
