In 2009 was made Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes académiques for services to French culture, and in 2011 Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. McGuinness has written two novels, The Last Hundred Days, which was longlisted for the Booker Prize and others, and won Wales Book of the Year and the Writers’ Guild Award for fiction, and Throw Me To the Wolves, which won the Encore Award, and a memoir, Other People’s Countries, which also won Wales Book of the Year, and the Duff Cooper Prize. He has also written and presented programmes for radio, including the Radio Three features 'A Short History of Stupidity' and 'The Art of Idleness'.
