The language is vibrant, worked for, and vivid in its portrayal of a relationship between two very different protagonists. During the course of this poetic journey, issues of faith and atheism are explored at depth, with an open, striking honesty. The book begins with the speaker, a young woman, driving to Bala on a wet Friday evening, for a gathering; she takes ‘honey \/ cakes hot in Tupperware’ and is invited to ‘Come\/in, and know us better’. It is here, among the ‘friends of other friends’, that she first meets David, a man who is ‘strumming on a stool’. We see him through her eyes, as someone asks: ‘Sing for us, David’. And so, it begins – this growing love affair that is equally a collision of opposites and a pilgrimage through questions, doubts and pain. David, Welsh, rooted in the language of home, is portrayed as ‘Corn-stubble face ... \/ A full presence’. She, an incomer who has chosen Wales, Aberystwyth her ‘adopted harbour’, arrives with ‘psalms whispering like a cassette’, observant and faith-filled. He is vigorous, robust and outdoorsy. He sings, loves jazz, is an ‘atheist, un-\/shaven soldier’ on leave. She is ‘a Monastery carved into a granite hill’, in trust to ‘the invisible’. And yet, there is magnetic attraction, beautifully evoked in these finely-chiselled poems. He says: You are no monastery. They are full of men, mutts, beggars. If you are, you must let me in. I am all these and more. She says, in a single line poem, ‘I’m thirsty as earth in high summer’. It is as if, in this intermingling, earth and spirit come together, the relationship developing between ‘the soldier, sheep farmer’s son’ who has no need for religion – ‘holy verse was spoilt \/ for him at school’ – and the speaker whose faith is an intimate part of her life, who senses ‘webbed dimensions. \/ A being ingenious beyond my ken’. When she says to Agape: ‘I’ve met another who fathoms me; not afraid, uninterested or taken’, she adds ‘He knows I come with you attached’. And then, at the heart of the book, comes the longest sequence, 'Poem 47'. Most poems inhabit one page, three at most. This one takes four. The speaker takes David to her church – and here we see, portrayed in aching detail, a crunch-point develop in the relationship that has been so far, so good, despite differences. The speaker stands ‘afraid’; we sense that this is more her element than David’s. Here are the hymns she knows so well, the set psalms. As if making a decision, she says: I’m done with censorship. If David won’t hear me worship he’ll never know the core of me. As David ‘mouths the hymns, twitchy \/ an out-of-place school boy’, she raises her arms, at which, ‘he sinks to the pew, \/ coughs at the stone-flagged floor’. We’re both angry – don’t know why. I call outward; believe I’m heard – yes – ‘by the man in the sky.’ It is an excruciating moment, powerfully evoked. We feel for him. We feel for her. Apichella has created characters to care about. The experience jolts the relationship, and vulnerability is laid bare, with poems that bring a beautiful exposure to the resulting turmoil and anguish: I shouldn’t say goddammit goddammit. In the end, after all the heart-ache, the sense of being wrought, it is love that triumphs: ‘I wake and know, \/ David’s an atheist after God’s own heart’. David is returned to her, wounded from war in ‘the deserts’. She, too, has been wounded, and remade from it: Take me, an apple, bruised on the ground, wash off my grit with a cold blast from the kitchen tap. Finally, she is again driving to Bala, but this time, she is with him, and there is a sense of something won from the dark, and integrated. One feels that Apichella has been true to the poetic urge to name what’s there, to find the form for its expression and turn it towards healing.
