In 1994 he was a visiting scholar at the Yale Center for British Art in the United States, and between 1996 and 2003 he led a research project for the University of Wales which resulted in the three-volume history The Visual Culture of Wales. More recent publications include an autobiography, Relationships with Pictures (2013) and The Art of Music: Branding the Welsh Nation, co-written with Dr Rhian Davies (2022). He has curated large-scale exhibitions for Welsh institutions including the National Library of Wales, where ‘No Welsh Art: Exploring the Myth’, was shown in 2024–2025.
