She is working in partnership with National Museum Wales to examine the use of ekphrastic poetry as a tool for visitor engagement in art museums. Originally from Sheffield, Rachel moved to Aberystwyth to complete a BA in 2003. Since then she has moved around the UK, working in various museums as far apart as The Wordsworth Trust in Grasmere and The Ashmolean in Oxford. She returned to Wales in 2009 to help create the new city-run Cardiff Story Museum. Her poems, reviews and articles have been published in magazines including Poetry Wales, Under the Radar, Mslexia, Acumen and Envoi. The poetry welcomes the reader into Carney’s complex private sphere to gain comprehension of a unique perspective on life – through the lens of a neurodivergent experience and the considerations of living with a diagnosis of dyspraxia as an adult. These outstanding poems offer such depth of feeling that each is as highly engaging and emotive as the next, and the collection overall has a sensitive and warm humour with regard to the human condition. Through a person-centred perspective, the poems contain astute reflections on daily life’s challenges. There are deep connections with pre-history, anima, paintings and nature. Poems such as ‘You see Yourself’ (after Elizabeth Siddal) explore concepts of human creation which are entirely unique. The poet’s knowledge of human history is integral with her creativity, and her astoundingly acute descriptions of relationships are empathic and exquisite to read. In an unusual twist, the poem, ‘I am trying not to write a poem about you’, in which she references the painting, Tiger in a Storm , reflects social difficulties and the journeys of relationships. ‘You Have Become Too Much’ is a poem which spans a wide spectrum too, as the physical body and mind wrangle with potential changes in relationships with herself\/others and a sense of possible renewal. Here the strength of the swimmer comes through: ‘I push through swallowing \/ gagging on salt each wave shocks cold \/ each breath gasped held each stroke propels me \/ from what was said and what was not pulling me \/ closer to the beating wild \/ weeping heart of me.’ Carney's perceptive interpretations of the human condition resonate for a long time after reading; they are positively inclusive of the reader. Each poem is immersive and often enlightened by her inner thoughts woven through the poetry. Throughout these well-crafted poems the poet expresses, rather than explains, how her diagnosis affects her ‘many selves’ as she realigns her life afterwards, revealing how ‘the norm’ of societal daily life is called into question. The poems are often laced with a delicate humour, so likeable that it can feel like conversing with a close friend. Here is a part of ‘Nine Brains at Midnight’: ‘The sixth brain is singing. \/ The seventh brain is composing a poem about a person who lies awake \/ at midnight, composing a poem. \/ The eighth brain is scripting a conversation it will never have. \/ And the ninth brain is wishing that the other eight brains would Just Shut Up and let it dream.’ Each of the poems unfolds at a timely pace, with a sense of the poet’s craft, as though Carney’s words are sounds on the page, all enhanced by her clever use of space and pauses. With emotive poetic language she has formed perceptive and highly developed methods of writing, clearly honing her craft to a very high degree. Carney is also comfortable in her poetic-prose pieces, as quoted here from the prose-poem, ‘Absolution’: ‘These are the tears that belong to the body of the one who cries them, who loves them from the very start. The one who claims them in their frailty, their gentleness. These are the tears that fall after midnight, the tears that stream down in a hot ungainly gush.’ This poetic-prose style, with the rhythms Carney uses, enlightens the reader without overwhelming, with a quiet balance being used to define the emotions she wishes to portray. This a fantastic collection of humane comprehension and sincere depth, portraying the poet’s life experiences, and sometimes awkward and challenging social scenarios. The strength of Carney’s charismatic voice shines through. A natural talent with an enigmatic edge, her brilliant collection will invite several readings, to engage with the poet’s colourful and multiple worlds again and again.
