She was bound for Patagonia, seven thousand miles away. On board were 162 Welsh men, women and children whose traditions and language were being threatened by the anglicization that was engulfing Wales and whose poverty was driving them to seek a new land. The name of the ship was Mimosa. In Mimosa: the Life and Times of the Ship that Sailed to Patagonia , Susan Wilkinson has researched the entire history of the Mimosa, from her construction in Aberdeen to her last days as a storage hulk on the mosquito-infested coast of West Africa. The Mimosa is mentioned in all histories, diaries and even books of fiction, that have been written, and are still being written, on the Welsh colony in Patagonia. Except for that almost legendary voyage, little is known of her except that she had been a tea clipper. Hitherto, nothing has been written of her other voyages or of what happened to her after her voyage to Patagonia. As well as her voyage to Patagonia, the longest portion of the book, are details of the shipyard where she was constructed, the innovations of her design, the possible origin of her name, her launch in Aberdeen, the Liverpool merchants who owned her and the period in maritime history which caused her to be constructed in the first place, the personalities of the various masters who sailed her to every corner of the world -- to Brazil, Mauritius, China, the Malay and Indonesian archipelagos, Patagonia, and West Africa -- and the trades in which she was involved. The Mimosa made twenty-seven voyages, all of which are documented. She had six masters of varying navigational skills and crews who were frequently violent, drunk and abusive. Some lost their lives when they fell overboard in storms. Others, often “crimped” or “shanghaied” in Liverpool and taken on board against their will, deserted in Chinese or Brazilian ports.
