So whether you’re the type of reader who revels in the insight of others or who prefers to dispense with the discussion and get down to the story at hand, it is hard to disagree with this edition’s informative prologue essay scribed by Dr John Pikoulis, co-chair of Literature Wales, who himself exclaims that ‘the contribution of this novel to the art of fiction is yet to be appreciated’. Set deep in the south Wales valleys of Merthyr Tydfil and Carmarthen in the early twentieth century, Island of Apples accommodates a rapidly accelerating plotline initially set within the quasi-comforting confines of home. But, as reality drifts and clear vision is distorted beyond all accepted adult recognition, the layering of fantastical characters and the omnipresent fog of adolescent imagination imposed by the likeable young protagonist Dewi leave the reader guessing at what concrete reality genuinely exists along his emotional journey. Entering stage left and unleashing a tsunami of pent-up emotion in the young boy comes the heroically vibrant and mysterious figure of Karl – even as Dewi’s family flit from agony to tragedy, barely a flicker of recognition registers as compared to his involvement in his hero’s battle with the grotesquely distorted embodiment of venom that is school master Growler. Meanwhile, as Dewi lurches nervously between the mythical acceptance of childhood and the responsibilities of growing up, he must decide about the symbolic importance he has entrusted in his new friend while his life cascades along beneath him. Upon finishing Island of Apples , I knew I had no choice but to read the novel again and, even as I flicked over the first few pages, a wealth of different interpretations, symbolic impact and new ideas came to me. One could no doubt spend hours dissecting this book, looking into its connections with Arthurian legend and picking apart exactly which elements of the story stray into the ethereal. Or you could just set aside a few hours and enjoy a thumping good read!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0041/5340/9585/files/9780708324295_a4a2fbe7-d273-48e3-be00-ef1779e4fe6d.jpg?v=1790352828
