It’s 1914 and the government’s recruitment drive is horribly effective, with proud young men queuing to join up, utterly innocent of the carnage that awaits them, yearning to fight for their country. Arthur is one of the first, lying about his age, only too keen to set off on this adventure. Jessie is devastated, but none of her desperate protestations will change his mind. It seems that the women of the village understand instinctively that this war means only pain and suffering, while the men and boys are caught up in patriotic fervour as they march cheerfully off to join the fighting. Jessie’s mother, Dorothy, runs the village bakery. She and Jessie are recovering from the death of her husband six months before. But with the outbreak of war, Dorothy’s fears and timidity come to the fore and she feels the need to remarry, to have the protection of a man, and to have his help in the bakery. The man she chooses is Amos Morgan. Jessie loathes him, but nothing she can say will change her mother’s mind. And so there he is, in her home, and in the bakery downstairs, always getting too close to her, brushing against her, knowing she knows what he is doing but knowing also that she is helpless. Jessie finds solace and company with Arthur’s mother, Edna. The two women share their love and fear for Arthur and also their hatred of Amos Morgan. And when Jessie is no longer welcome in her own home, Edna is more than happy to have Jessie move in with her. They wait together each day for the postal delivery. Waiting for word from Arthur. The enclosed, narrow world of the village, with its restraints on behaviour and disapproval of anything that smacks of lacking in respectability, contrasts with the disgusting mayhem of war. The men and boys deposited in the nightmare world of the trenches are existing outside any moral code, other than to kill or be killed, and to never desert, on pain of death. Judith Barrow writes with an easy, flowing style, and the story bounds and leaps along with a wonderful energy. Any predictability in the twists and turns of the plot is offset by the engaging cast of characters Barrow has created, not least among them Jessie. She grows and develops as the novel progresses, from a timid girl to a strong young woman capable of standing up for herself, and for others, against overwhelming odds. The world is changing, and even in this small rural village the ripples of change are being felt.
