Passengers suffered and had their lives put at risk as trains were driven faster than was safe. Sanity was soon restored. Then in 1895, they did it all over again. This time it was to Aberdeen, except Aberdeen station wasn’t the target, it was a lonely outpost nobody had heard of. This gave the west coast railway plenty of scope for playing more dirty tricks on their rival. Finally came the fatal crash as a speeding train came off the rails at Preston. That was it.
