She has published five collections of poetry, most recently Radium Dreams (Women's Art Collection, Murray Edwards College, Cambridge), which is a collaboration with the artist Eileen Cooper RA, inspired by the remarkable life of Marie Curie. Sue has also published three novels with her fourth, Flatlands, forthcoming from Pushkin Press in June 2023. Sue's poems have been read on Radio 3, Radio 4 and RTE, and appeared in The Irish Times, The London Magazine and Acumen, as well as prestigious anthologies. As an art critic she has written for Time Out, The Independent, The New Statesman and The London Magazine and is a senior writer for Artlyst. In this volume, she brings all three disciplines together, taking an original approach to biography through the medium of poetry. The book opens with an introduction that provides the outlines of Gwen John’s life as a Welsh artist. John studied in London, relocated to Paris in 1904, worked as an artist’s model and had an affair with Auguste Rodin. From about 1913, John devoted herself to Catholicism and largely withdrew from the world into contemplation, hence the sobriquet ‘God’s little artist’. Throughout her life, John maintained her painting practice and study of art, producing portraits featuring an introspective intensity and innovative brushwork evoking an impressionistic style. Hubbard uses poetry to portray John’s imagined inner experience through all stages of her life. The poems are not primarily narrative, but rather lyrical glimpses of intense moments. Some of these poems describe her acts of painting the portraits for which she is well known. Other poems describe her emotional longing for Rodin or scenes from the convent where she painted portraits of nuns. Hubbard’s language is highly visual and rich in suggestive detail. For example, ‘Life Drawing’ is a series of tidy couplets in which Hubbard vividly imagines John drawing pictures of school girls as they pray in church: The white ribbons of their broad-brimmed hats streaked against the growing dark. She pulls out a pencil, begins with a thick plait snaking down a bony back. The poem closes with an evocative, iridescent image: Tired now, wrung out, she’s almost transparent. The collection is filled with resonant small moments such as this, like pearl beads strung on a necklace with precision. The reader is invited to linger over the visual and emotional images created here. It is worth mentioning that, while the poems describe John’s spiritual devotion and struggles, the reader is not required to take a position on religious matters one way or the other. Anyone who appreciates the quiet beauty evoked by sensitive description will find much of value here. Because of this structure built around micro-moments, the reader gets a flavour of different periods in John’s life, but not everything is narrated. Readers who want to gain a full understanding of John’s life and work may want to consult a full biography in conjunction with these poems and will certainly appreciate reproductions of her artwork as a complement to the words presented here.
