Captain Geoffrey Crawshay, founder of the famous Crawshay's Welsh XV, was once heard to say, 'Whenever I hear the phrase 'the Church militant', I always think of the Lampeter XV on the field'. Major Cliff Jones, that great Welsh outside-half, and later President of the Welsh Rugby Union, also remembered playing for Llandovery College against Lampeter College, an experience which led him to conclude that 'any resemblance between rampaging theological forwards and the men who later wore the dog-collar with such piety and distinction, is purely accidental!' When an incident involving the Lampeter College rugby team was reported in the Carmarthen Journal under the heading 'The Fighting Parsons,' the name stuck. However, that reputation was based on a much older and illustrious history. This book celebrates the fact that the Rugby School rules of football were first introduced into Wales at St. David's College, Lampeter, in 1850 by the Rev. Dr. Rowland Williams. There was a rugby football club in Lampeter College waiting for all the other clubs in Wales to be founded.
