He is an author and journalist, and is known as the official biographer of Iris Murdoch, whose essays and letters he also collected and edited, in separate volumes. He has also written a study of Murdoch's novels. In addition, he is the biographer of the soldier-poet Frank Thompson, the author of a guide to buddhism, Going Buddhist , and has published At the Bright Hem of God , a literary exploration of Radnorshire. Conradi has, since 2007, co-edited the and is a Trustee of the Bleddfa Centre for the Creative Spirit. He has written or reviewed for the TLS , New Statesman , FT , Spectator , Independent and Guardian . In this memoir Conradi returns to his long-held fascination with Murdoch and her absorbing life and philosophy, but includes details of his own life and family history and the personal resonances which drew him to Murdoch. Since he wrote the biography, more revelations of Murdoch’s world of relationships have come to light and these are included too. Conradi’s mother’s family was living in the East End of London in the early 1800s when his great-great-grandfather started a modest scrap business, which grew over the years and generations to be a hugely successful enterprise. A vast and far-flung Jewish family, with relatives in many countries across the world, was true for both his mother’s and his father’s families, with Conradi’s paternal grandmother Florence adding to the mix with her roots in America and marriage to the German Emil Conradi, whose family had fled Paris in 1870 ahead of the approaching Prussian army and the resulting hostility towards Germans within France. Conradi loved his paternal grandmother; they travelled together and relished each other’s company, and he sees in his love of her company the seeds of his later ‘discipleship’ of Murdoch. He also sees his need to protect Murdoch as a reflection of his desire as a boy and young adult to protect his mother from the vagaries of his father’s misery and anger. It is painful to read about the father perceived as an enemy to be excluded from the purity of mother\/son love. Conradi’s father Gordon suffered as Florence’s non-favourite son, with his younger, highly successful brother taking precedence over him again and again. Gordon had to leave boarding school because ostensibly there wasn’t enough money to keep both him and his brother there; he had no room of his own and slept on a couch in the family home, while his brother enjoyed a bedroom to himself. The echoes of this must have resonated as Gordon’s own son sided with his wife against him. Thankfully Conradi does later establish a relationship and some understanding with his father. With wry self-awareness Conradi relates his journey through various educational establishments including Oundle, following in his father’s footsteps, and his exploration of his burgeoning homosexuality, luckily coinciding with the (very slightly) more liberal 1960s. He first met Murdoch in 1965, drawn to her partly because of her inclusion of positive gay characters in her novels, and over many years he became a close friend and protector of this enigmatic woman. She was often encircled by admirers and fellow writers whose intentions were far from honourable. Conradi reveals the vulnerabilities of highly acclaimed authors; the battling of fragile egos and jealousies; the competitiveness over such facile things as who has written the most books, coming from some of the great writers and philosophers of the twentieth century. Minds that can produce amazingly perceptive erudite thought accompanied by a hefty dose of human frailty. The fractured construction, where different threads are begun then left behind to be returned to later, means the reader has to hold the details of a huge cast of characters and locations to make sense of the interwoven stories, memories, portraits and expositions of thought and philosophy that Conradi has employed as the building blocks to construct his memoir.
