'The Estate Agent’s Daughter' (Seren 2020) is the eagerly awaited second collection to her multi-award winning debut collection 'Clueless Dogs' (Seren 2012) and her illustrated pamphlet of bird poems 'Brood' (Seren 2017).\u003c\/p\u003e\u003c\/section\u003e\u003csection\u003e\u003ch3\u003eAdolygiad y Cyhoeddwr \/ Publisher Review\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis collection follows poet Rhian Edwards’s multi-award-winning Clueless Dogs (2012) and begins with the sort of witty, bravura piece she is known for. The title poem describes her as her house in ‘estate-agent-speak’, but lines such as ‘master bedroom is in need of updating’ and ‘no ongoing chain’ hint at much more than the humorous style would suggest. The second piece, ‘Counting Boards’, is addressed to her father and would seem to be a childhood reminiscence, but the last lines of each stanza are barbed and it concludes – ‘You confided more words to your dictaphone \/ than I could receive in a single tax year.’ This and the shocking portrait of ‘Gareth’ make the acknowledgement section surprising. That it is dangerous to read apparently autobiographical poems as necessarily factual is illustrated in ‘Poems in the Dock’, in which poems from Edwards’s first collection are ‘subpoenaed’ to testify against the poet in the divorce court. The poems successfully plead her case that they cannot be read in that way. So the reader should be warned not to take an apparent sequence at face value. That said, these poems convey a strong sense of mature and unhappy experience in relationships (her own or observed). There is an unpromising wedding in the USA, brilliantly captured in ‘Argos Wedding’, and the sequence invoking the magpie rhyme (also appearing in the Brood collection) circles around an unsatisfactory engagement ring and contains the harrowing miscarriage poem, ‘Something Else’. The placing of ‘This was the Spring’ (which begins, ‘This was the season the lambs were born frozen’) to follow it is very powerful. Portrait poems were notable in the previous collection. The woman in ‘Free, No Obligation Valuation’ is a funny, slice-of-Bridgend life, and the pair, ‘Threnody’ and ‘David’, written in memory of Enid Hughes and her husband, are warm, heartfelt tributes to old friends but also reveal a longing for the kind of marriage that they had. Part Three tells the story of a middle-aged couple’s relationship which is unsparing in its details of both participants and not hopeful from the start – even recalling her estate-agent-speak in describing them as ‘structurally unsound \/ in need of underpinning’. The opening of ‘Love and Taxes’ (‘Who knew the arc of us could be charted \/ through a year’s cache of receipts?’) echoes the sting in the tale of ‘Counting Boards’, and ‘Handover’ feels bleakly honest about the habits of empty intimacy. The final poem’s last stanza may have a hint of hope but not reassurance. Edwards’s poems about the changes of aging and memories of past selves are deft, clear-eyed and very relatable. ‘It is’ has a catalogue of moments of grace, from sipping ‘perfectly sweetened tea’ to seeing a scan of a living twelve-week-old child, but among its gentle pleasures is ‘the relief of a decent barrister against your ex’.
