Hughes is presented as a self-effacing hero whose contribution was only recognised after his death in 1977. The building itself involved nearly a thousand men working from 1942 onwards, as part of a much bigger project that employed 45,000 men across Britain. At Conwy, both prototypes and then pierheads and pontoons were constructed. Although the 'Mulberry A' harbour at Cherbourg was destroyed by a storm within a fortnight of being constructed, 'Mulberry B' at Arromanches provided a vital supply link for the troops in the Normandy beachhead, with the target figure of 6,000 tons unloaded per day being reached in early July 1944. This booklet, written in a brisk and unadorned style, is illustrated with sixteen pages of black and white photographs and is generally accurately and clearly-presented, although the 'Battle of Medway' should have been 'Battle of Midway' (p. 8), and the fact that neither bibliography nor notes are supplied is regrettable.
