They are classified into 7 areas: Carneddau, Glyderau, Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), Moelwynion, Rhinogydd, Cadair Idris and the Migneint. Rocks in Snowdonia were formed during the Cambrian, Ordovician and Silurian ages. The Cambrian began 700 to 500 million years ago (Ordovician was named after a warlike Welsh band of people called the Ordovices). The development of lakes here is due in greater part to the Ice Age some 10,000 years ago. Some of the featured lakes are reservoirs. They were used years ago as a source of water for driving waterwheels and machinery in the slate and metal mining industries. However, this does not detract from their beauty.
