She is a recipient of a 2020 Northern Writers Award for Poetry, and the 2021 Poetry Business New Poets Prize. Her first pamphlet ‘Dear Body’ was published by Wayleave Press; and her second ‘Where I’d Watch Plastic Trees Not Grow’ was published by Verve Poetry. It is this experience which informs not just the concept of the exceptionally well-written title poem but Hannah’s entire life, and the poet details in this book how she navigates the world with a disability that threatens both her physical body and the stability of her mental health. The collection commences with the poem ‘163 Days’ (the longest and arguably the best), with the title referencing Hannah’s longest hospital stay yet, arriving at the age of sixteen and being discharged at seventeen. Primarily, it emphasises the immense gap between Hannah’s personal experiences inside the hospital, expressed in visceral poetic lines that are full of emotion, and the tone of the doctors’ notes written throughout her stay, which are cold and unfeeling, with both perspectives being date-marked to make it even more real. By the end of the piece, the poet’s body seems to become its own sentient being as Hannah is so detached from it, which is understandable after reading of all the trauma it has caused her during these 163 days. This theme seems to permeate the remaining works in the collection, namely ‘Womb in Monochrome’ and ‘Bipolar Disorder Secondary to Mitochondrial Encephalopathy’, a poem that hints at a body displaced, but also offers a morsel of hope: ‘one day when my spine crumbles \/\/ I’ll have another waiting in Waterstones’. Although Hannah’s situation is unique and something most will never experience in their lifetime, she somehow makes it tremendously easy for the reader to relate to her poems, with her every word being felt and absorbed wholeheartedly, which is a credit to how talented a writer she is. This is particularly recognised in the title poem, because the stark difference between Hannah’s stanzas and the stanza detailing the medical notes really highlights her poetic brilliance. She writes, ‘I feel like snow disappearing into wet ground, \/\/ (but I’m not self-righteous enough to say that out loud)’, whilst the reader is taken aback when the opposite stanza refers to Hannah by her name rather than just ‘patient’. However, Hannah’s relatability as a poet does not come just from her writing skills, but also from the fact that she endeavours to remind her readers that she is not just a disabled person but a multifaceted woman with the same struggles as an able-bodied person. For example, in the poem entitled ‘Bright Dead Things’, Hannah contemplates her inability to conceive; in ‘Window Eating’, she talks about wanting what she cannot have, and then in ‘Death Inc.’, she details the fears she has surrounding the potentially universal fear of death. All are consequences of her medical condition, yet they are all symptomatic of the shared human condition as well. Yes, Hannah is a disabled person, but her human experience is as visceral as anyone else’s and, if anything, she is able to write more authentically on it because of what she has endured as a palliative-care patient. This is why 163 Days is recommendable to absolutely anyone. It is such a sincere and compelling collection, containing poems that will make one feel anything but apathy; as Hannah reminds readers in the Acknowledgements, ‘even the dying are alive’.
